Color Story

Halloween may have past, but we still have ghosts in my neighborhood.
White:

And the fresh colors of spring have faded, but their shadows are left behind.
Pink:

We haven't had a frost yet so some buds are still blooming.
Red:

And pumpkins remain in tact.
Orange:

The leaves are fading.
Yellow:

Not all of them.
Green:

We are all in hats now.
Blue:

Though maybe only when we sleep can we keep them on our heads.
Purple:

Time to get close to stay warm.
Brown:

And avoid the nasty weather brewing.
Black:

We are ready for a new season.

Color Story: A day with Amira

We are walking a little earlier than usual this Tuesday.
White:

Amira has been having difficulty sleeping through the night lately, just when I got used to a full night of sleep again.
Pink:

And with the sun rising a little later, it feels even earlier when we leave the house.
Red:

Though on this walk, she conked out almost immediately...
Orange:

Which gives me hope that she is not waking up because she is done sleeping.
Yellow:

I saw a new tooth breaking through today-so maybe the worst is over and she will sleep tonight.
Green:

But despite her discomfort, she is still full of energy to explore.
Blue:

We walked some of our street without the stroller. Of course she wants to go in every driveway, touch every parked car, climb every stair, pull on every fence, and sit on whatever grass she can find!
Purple:

We walked to the park. I haven't been to the park in a while, so quick the time flies. She goes to the park at school, and I know she can climb-as she comes home with the bumps. But today was the first time I really saw her at it.
Brown:

I was being ridiculous, climbing through the jungle gym after her, hoping my hips didn't become suddenly wedged in the process. I held her hands to slow her ride down the smallest slide, only to later see her take her own precautions-going down feet first on her belly.
Black:

She copied some bigger girls putting mulch on a see-saw-and now that is how that ride works. A home for mulch:) I wish I saw more of this everyday!

Color Story: Waterford

Went home this past weekend and walked Amira around the streets I used to play on.
White:

Labor Day marks the end of summer, mostly because schools starts right after the holiday. I spent so many years waiting for the bus in the same spot, when I walk on that street I can't help but think of those times.
Pink:

Where did I stand? Who did I talk to? Who did I sit with on the bus?
Red:

The years my mom waited with us, and met us upon return.
Orange:

And when we went to the bus stop on our own.
Yellow:

I remember the boys playing football. I remember throwing a tennis ball against someones brick garage, I remember when someone put salt on a slug, I remember when I started showering in the morning and my hair freezing in the cold.
Green:

I remember the day we were all waiting for the bus and it never came. The person living in the house by the stop came out and told us school was canceled.
Blue:

I remember running up the alley to catch the bus.
Purple:

When we missed the bus, we had to finagle a ride from whose ever parents had not left for work yet.
Brown:

When I was older, I walked from the school home a few times. A way to spend some extra time with friends.
Black:

So this time of year, the smell of the wind can bring those moments back.
Gray:

And I know from this feeling, fall is here.

Color Story

We went to see some old friends of my husband's last night, and stayed out a little late.
White:

We put Amira in her stroller and she fell asleep in their play room.
Pink:

We ate so much food:
Red:

guacamole, baklava, Bulgarian cheese, crab cakes, grilled chicken, potato salad...
Orange:

wine, beer.
Yellow:

I hoped the late night would encourage Amira to sleep a little late...
Green:

...I know better than to believe that.
Blue:

So we got up, ate breakfast and took a little walk.
Purple:

Soon we will be getting ready to head off to a wedding.
Brown:

We are attending weddings this weekend and next.
Black:

But right now, we are just playing at home.

Another walk, another color story.

Walking through the streets of our Dorchester neighborhood today, it began to rain.
Just a little.
White:

I like looking at all the houses, the patterns of the shingles, the size of the window, what is in the windows (some glass bottles, a barking dog, a lace curtain.)
Pink:

I turned around, but by the time we got back to our street the rain stopped. Amira, agitated that the stroller stopped, pressed me with her babels to walk some more.
Red:

Going into other peoples spaces, seeing where their furniture is, what is worn where, what nick knacks are scattered about, the towels in the bathroom-all of it is interesting to me.
Orange:

The most mundane details of life.
Yellow:

I guess I am what one would call a looky loo.
Green:

Growing up my mom was always bringing us to open houses, hoping to find her dream home.
Blue:

Amira and I took our time looking at our neighbor's flowers. So many people keep their front yards so neat!
Purple:

The rain started and stopped again and again but was never too heavy.
Brown:

Amira kept leaning forward.
Black:

A man coming down his front stairs saw her and smiled big. "These are the best days of your life" he said.
